The planning for the Arnold Arboretum Centennial celebration began in 1967 when Dr. Richard A. Howard, Arboretum Director from 1954-1978, appointed committees of supporters and visiting-committee members to raise funds for the upcoming event. The Living Collections Dept. laid the foundation for the Peters Hill renovation project in May 1994 with the publication of: Peters Hill renovation plan. The renovation work began in fall 1997 with the removal of the blacktop road leading to the summit, and in spring 1998 the work was completed with grading and plantings.
